The study assesses the current noise conditions in the studio, and it intends to develop and implement a comprehensive methodology for appraising noise levels and specifically in the open-plan studio environment. It employs quantitative and qualitative methodologies to examine the extent of subjective and objective factors influencing noise perception. In addition, my aim is to evaluate existing literature reviews on the behaviour of sound and to understand the effects of noise on health, learning, and productivity. Noise control is a critical yet often overlooked aspect of the building appraisal due to its complex, subjective, and psychological nature. This complexity arises from various factors attributing to the differentiation of human noise perception and environmental landscape. Meanwhile, noise perception is inherently complex and is shaped by many scientific factors, such as loudness, ambiguity of sound direction, unfamiliarity of the sound. The psychological aspects regarding the non-auditory effects, include the individual behavioural responses and personal etiquette practices. The arrival of water in 19th-century Marseille was embodied in all aspects of life: hygiene, agriculture, and industry. It was celebrated through the construction of the Water Fountain spectacle and Palais Longchamp. Today, water security in the region is dominated by the evolving climate crisis, bringing extreme weather changes that lead to droughts and water scarcity across the region. My thesis centralizes around the precious management of water resources, particularly through the establishment of the Water Institute of Marseille, which facilitate public discussions and debates to address water security. Additionally, two public exhibition galleries showcase the sensory experience and historical context of water in the region. This presents an opportunity to showcase the scale and appreciation of water infrastructure intervention historically built for Marseille. Contextually, the strategic location of the Longchamp basin infrastructure is being re-adapted and utilised to function as additional storage during periods of dry weather. <img width="14042" The study explored historical precedents, including ancient open-air amphitheatres and enclosed acoustic environments. Additionally, it analysed the significant scientific advancements in acoustics during the 19th century, particularly the contributions of Wallace Clement Sabine. The dissertation employed parametric simulation to examine sound reflection, drawing on the principles of light geometry to determine the number of rays reflected off surfaces. This approach also enabled planar calculations, such as analysing the number of rays reaching the audience seating area. As a case study, the successes of the Berlin Philharmonic, designed by Hans Scharoun, were investigated to provide deeper insights and complement the research. The key spaces within Pollokshields Playhouse are; auditorium, theatre and community rooms. The atrium is a juncture which interconnects with all the key spaces aforementioned, as well as providing the circulation thresholds with the wider context of the site. Other key spaces include a gallery for art installations, an outdoor terrace and bar for performance interlude breaks. The exterior language of the mono-pitched room expresses both the performance spaces, in addition Profiliet Glass which diffuses the light giving an internal atmospheric backdrop over the adjacent allotment gardens. The hard-landscaping creates two paths; diagonal and straight which links to existing buildings such as; Shields Medical Centre, Glendale Primary School and Pollokshields Medical Practice. The soft-landscape is intertwined with trees and grass to embed and reinforce the building typology of ‘building in the round’. An outdoor amphitheatre is sandwiched in-between the paths directly opposite the main entrance to the building, creating a main focal point. Materiality, the building is clad in red Pilotage stretcher bricks which reinforces the industrial vicinity of the site, it is furthermore characterised with Corten-Steel panels underneath window sills and lintels. Internally, acoustical timber panels are used in both performance spaces to create a suitable acoustical environment. complex. It is situated at a prominent corner site opposite Maxwell Square on Leslie Street within the site boundary of Pollokshields. The theme of thresholds is central to the design of Maxwell Court, which encourages interaction amongst the communities through the shared atrium space where all apartments adjoin. The ground floor is open plan with four separate units and is dedicated for local businesses or spaces for community groups. On the upper floors, lies the residential flats which offers a mixture of 1-bed, 2-bed and 3-bed apartments to cater for a wider demographic. More so, the corner block cantilevers which responds to the adjacent exiting tenement blocks. This is further insinuated by the separate roof profile which demarcates the living areas of each flat. In terms of service and access, the ground floor has a dedicated bin store and bike storage area to serve for the commercial units and residential flats. Materiality, the cladding of the building is in keeping with the neighbouring blonde sandstone tenements and zinc roofing. Internally, the shared atrium space has a modern and minimalistic feel with a timber texture board marked concrete finish and a timber balustrade deck.
